Buyer guide · The complete deal

The monthly payment is only one number.

A payment can fit your monthly budget and still leave you with a more expensive deal. Compare the written details side by side before you decide.

Separate price from payment.

Request a written out-the-door price that shows the vehicle price, taxes, registration, dealer fees, and selected add-ons. Then compare the financing separately: amount financed, APR, term, finance charge, and total of payments.

A longer loan can lower the monthly payment while increasing total interest and the time you owe money. Compare offers using the same down payment and loan length where possible.

Ask: “What changes if we keep the loan term the same?”

It helps reveal whether a lower payment comes from a better price or rate—or simply more months of payments.

Financing offers deserve comparison.

A dealership can arrange financing with one or more lenders. In some transactions, the rate offered to you can include compensation above the lender’s underlying rate. Compare the written dealer offer with financing you may obtain elsewhere, while considering any conditions attached to incentives.

Optional does not mean unsuitable.

Warranties, service contracts, protection packages, and accessories may have value for a particular buyer. Ask whether each is optional, its separate price, the coverage and exclusions, overlap with existing coverage, and cancellation terms. If financed, its cost may also attract interest.

Keep the trade-in visible.

Compare the purchase price, trade-in allowance, and outstanding trade loan separately. A high trade allowance does not automatically mean a better overall offer. If you owe more than the trade is worth, understand how that negative equity is handled.

Check advertised conditions.

Some advertised discounts depend on financing through a particular lender, owning a qualifying vehicle, military or other eligibility, or combining incentives. Ask which discounts you qualify for and request the full written price. Ordinary sales activity and useful optional products should not be confused with misleading claims.

Leasing has its own comparison.

Look at the amount due at signing, monthly payment, mileage allowance, excess-mileage charges, wear standards, end-of-lease fees, and purchase option. A low advertised payment alone is not enough to compare leases.

Before the final signature

  • Does the vehicle identification and agreed configuration match?
  • Are price, fees, down payment, and trade figures correct?
  • Are only the optional products you selected included?
  • Is financing final, or are there conditions still to satisfy?
  • Do the contract terms match what you understood?
  • Have you received copies of the documents?
